ACTIVITIES PURSUED BY 2008-12 BATCH

Our 2008-12 batch was the first batch under the newly attained autonomous status of our  esteemed institution, GCE. We stepped into our college with high hopes of satisfying our thirst for technical knowledge and personality development. Getting into a government college requires tons of hard work and perseverance and we passed this litmus test with finesse as we are one among the handful of meritorious students studying in Govt. College now-a-days.

LIFE AS A FRESHER:

Unlike other colleges where a fresher will be accommodated in separate Humanities Block, we entered our department straight away. Even though we were under  the control of the college administration directly in our first year, our  HOD encouraged to ensure many useful activities like fresher’s day party which helped to improve the senior-junior interactions  and to curb the ragging menace in our dept.

We learnt about the culture of our dept. from our seniors in the first year which helped us to get a basic understanding of our dept. subjects, how to cope up with peer pressure, and how to develop our ideas and embed them in our core area. We got an Assistant Prof. to teach us the basic subject of our stream-Electron Devices & Circuits in the first year itself. Such was the organization and planning in our dept. We got exposed to the various dept. labs and instruments in the first year itself which helped us to gain some grass-root level core knowledge which is not available to many of our friends in other colleges.

STEPPING INTO THE TECHNICAL REALM:

Continuing with the good work started in the first year, our second year life proceeded in the same vein. Apart from the permanent staffs, our HOD appointed some of our alumni who joined the dept. as part-time lecturers. These lecturers had a positive effect on us as they imparted their fresh ideas; their vibrant student experiencehelped us a lot. They guided us in the areas where they weren’t able to do well or yearned to do well. Periodic internal tests sprinkled on the academic calendar helped us to prepare well for the end-semester exams. We are proud to inform that Mr.KrishnaBalan of 2006-10 batch (our department alumni) who won a project presentation challenge in IIT-Kharagpur took special interest in infusing fresh ideas into the students minds. He taught us about the basics of robotics and about his robot which won in IIT. This induced some ideas in our minds and we started to work on our robotic projects.

Our HOD organized a one day workshop on ‘Measurements&Instrumentation’ conductedby Agilent Technologies especially to the student s of ECE which exposed us to the industrial working of the instrumentation field which is a vastly developing core area. We underwent Industrial Visit in Radio Astronomy Center, Ooty the one of its kind in India, which helped us to learn attain some basic knowledge about astronomical field in India.

We actively participated in each and every contest of COMNET’09,our intra dept. symposium. This is a trademark event of our dept. as most of the colleges conduct only inter-dept. symposiums negating intra-dept. ones .We were pitted against third year students and final years were the organizers. Due to the sincere efforts of the students, it was a grand success and we gained lot of knowledge as was the motive of such events.

DETOUR FROM STUDIES TO APPLICATIONS:

Then, we entered the third year having learnt the basics well and ready to embed theoretical knowledge with the applications. This was also the year where we started assisting the final years in organizing all the activities. The multitude of papers and project presentations begun that year. Our students started developing their own technical ideas and presented the same in various colleges and won accolades. Project ideas began to flourish and students started working on their project ideas. Students also attended various workshops in reputed institutions like NIT-T, PSG, etc. and In-Plant training in deemed organizations like All India Radio, ISRO, etc. which readied us to the industrial standards. Many extra labs which were not in our prescribed curriculum were introduced to attain some practical knowledge in those fields. We were taken to Vinayaka Missions Hospital periodically and gained hands-on training of the electronic instruments installed there which helped us in many aspects to study our subjects.

Also we underwent an Industrial Visit to Kodai FM where we learnt about the working of communication systems.  Also extra utility classes to learn C, C++ were introduced with the special care shown by our HOD. She took individual interest to teach other languages to students as it is very much essential and most of the students began to develop their other language skills well.Loratis, a personality development consulting firm, conducted a session to instill some smart personality traits which are essential in the modern-day corporate context.TCS conducted a placement training session which helped the students to prepare well for their placements.

As part of the global diaspora of electronics engineers, we organized and celebrated World Engineer’s Day on Sept 15.Our HOD talked about the responsibility of engineers in modern context and ways to serve the society and he nation in an eco-friendly way. And we also recognized and celebrated one of the path breaking inventions of mankind-World Wide Web. World Web Day was celebrated in our Seminar Hall by leading web designing expatriates in the industry and they gave us an insight into the fun and complexities involved with web designing. The session also included creating a blog and ways to earn from the internet.

MAKE OR BREAK PHASE:

We entered our final years with consistently improving technical credentials and fully prepared to organize the various events. We organized ‘Computer Networks’ workshop conducted by Tetcos Inc. which developed our practical knowledge. There was hands-on training to trainer kits and exposure to various algorithms involved in networking. Govt. arranged free placement training sessions daily conducted bySSTi(Student Software Training institute)free of cost to cater to the needs of the students. To maintain the physical well-being of the students and to create a healthy atmosphere among them, Yoga classes were conducted periodically. Awareness about various yogasanaswas given to students and they were encouraged to implement them to improve their physique. AIDS awareness session was conducted by Red Ribbon Club in the Auditorium premises.

Many reputed companies like TCS, Benchmark Broadcasting Corporation, HCL Technologies, iGATE, Checktronix, CSC, Web Peripherals, SatyamMahindra, etc visited our campus for recruitment. Due to the sincere efforts taken by our HOD who is also the placement officer of our college, a large number of companies took interest in visiting our campus. Our college was granted autonomous status by Anna University, Coimbatore in 2008 and our dept. along with Metallurgy dept. were the only two among the six depts.  in our college to get accreditation in 2009.

With the sincere efforts of our HOD and all the teaching staffs, we have been able to gain a rich technical experience and practical knowledge which also improved our personality traits. And we are confident about working for a big company to serve the nation and society well with our technical expertise.
